  • Four-step ID Process

Both Peterson bird apps make it easy to narrow down candidate birds to arrive at a positive identification. The following four-step process is unique to the Peterson apps and is only possible because the design of the apps allows you to compare birds by site, range, and song from a single screen.

    Step 1.

From the app's home screen, tap on a bird group most similar to the bird you observed (Owls, Hummingbirds, Woodpeckers, etc.)

    Step 2.

Quickly swipe through the screens deicing similar birds until you find a likely looking group.

    Step 3.

Tap to show range maps for the displayed birds. Eliminate candidate birds not in your location.

    Step 4.

Return to the illustrations screen, activate audio, and tap the illustrations of the candidate birds to compare bird songs.

After completing these four steps, there is a very good chance that you will have correctly identified the bird you observed. And, if you are still unsure, tap the details icon of the bird you think is closest to find links to more similar birds.

    It's that simple!
